Turkey’s socks export has been growing rapidly in recent years. Overriding Italy, Turkey has jumped to second place after China in socks exports globally, accounting for 10 percent of world exports in 2016. With its modern machinery park; high production and export capacity, Turkey has been inking its name in the global textile market. Istanbul houses around 85 per cent of the factories. There are more than 300 socks factories in Turkey with medium and large-scale production capabilities. It is estimated that 2.2 Billion pairs of socks and 300 Million pieces of pantyhose are produced annually in Turkey. Being an export-oriented sector, around 75 percent of socks produced in the country are being exported. The industry is exporting an average of $86 Million worth of socks every month. The EU ranks first in exports, with 85 percent of socks going to EU countries in 2016. The three largest buyers are the UK, Germany and France. According Turkish Statistical Institute, in 2016, Turkey exported 1.5 Billion pairs of socks and 146.5 Million pieces of pantyhose, worth more than 1 Billion dollars. Turkey is eyeing expansion in the US market by taking umpteen initiatives. The US is the world’s largest importer of socks by importing socks of $2.2 Billion annually. Turkish sock industry targets exporting $100 Million worth of products to the US market and would like to make Turkey one of the five biggest export destinations. As part of its US expansion initiative, Turkish sock industry is organizing a trade Mission to New York in September 2018 with participation of 12 top sock and hosiery industry companies. Their focus will be on establishing relationships with distributors, retailers and explore co-investing opportunities in the USA.
Istanbul Apparel Exporters’ Association (IHKIB) is the biggest sectoral institution in Turkey established in 1986.
İHKİB has more than 9.425 member exporter companies in the apparel field.
İHKİB member companies realize %75 of Turkish total apparel which is around 17 Billion dollars annually amounting to %12 of country’s total exports.
IHKIB organizes events in order to facilitate export. These include; participation in international fairs, coordinating trade missions, and organizing young designer contests each year since 1992 in order to improve the design capacity of our industry. IHKIB’s main goal is to increase Turkey’s talent for garment and apparel exportation and to promote its industry globally. IHKIB is also aiming to look after the industry’s interests both on national and international platforms. Within this scope, IHKIB supports many of its members’ commercial activities.
